SPIRITUALITY and AGEING
Does spirituality increase with age?Ìý Questions about the meaning of life and death, their purpose and what happens after we're gone, are all subjects which stir great emotion and reflection.Ìý Asked by those of all faiths and those with none, these questions also have profound psychological implications for the way we live our lives as we get older.
Raj Persaud hears the views of some listeners, and Alan Smith, a former lay preacher and Religious Education teacher relates the psychology behind his "conversion" experience, when he lost his faith.
Raj Persaud is joined by Peter Coleman, Professor of Psychogerontology at the University of Southampton to discuss his longitudinal study on the relationship between spirituality and ageing, and the influence and impact of religious, spiritual and philosophical attitudes in the ageing process.Ìý

Susie Orbach is a psychoanalyst and a visiting professor of sociology at the London School of Economics.Ìý Raj Persaud asks Susie Orbach about her involvement in psychoanalysis@LSE, a new initiative which aims to revive the presence and influence of psychoanalysts at the University, and questions how much psychoanalysis will help to shape our lives in the future.Ìý
BINGE DRINKING
New research suggests that binge drinking amongst young people attending university is rapidly becoming the number one mental health problem at colleges. Recent studies amongst girls between 11 and 16, show that they are now drinking the same amount as boys and in one study were found to have overtaken them.
Raj Persaud is joined by Dr Jane Marshall, a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Institute of Psychiatry and specialist in the treatment of women with alcohol problems to discuss the psychology behind why young women are increasingly turning to drink and what research can tell us about the neurological damage they risk.
