A Harsh Winter & Independence for India
In 1947 Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece. The coal mines were nationalised. The sucontinentent was partitioned into mainly Hindu India and mainly Moslem Pakistan. Indian independence was rushed through Parliament and the speed of the proceedings left tens of thousands of Muslims and Hindus in the wrong place. Muslims had no time to move to Parkistan and Hindus no time to move to India. There was much blood shed.
Britain experienced a terrible winter which did not help the poor, the unemployed, the homeless and the hungry. The budget in November of 1947 was a particular solemn and sensitive occasion due to the state of the nation. Things were so bad that gold reserves were being used to pay import duties. Hugh Dalton, Chancellor of the Exchequer, told a journalist from The Star about his tax cuts before delivering his budget to the Commons. Although there were no market consequences of this advanced information Dalton had to resign.

Denis Charles Scott Compton (1918-1997)- Denis Compton was born in London.
- He is best known as a cricketer although, like his brother, Leslie, he was also a professional foot-baller and played for Arsenal.
- In cricket he played for Middlesex and won his first England cap in 1937.
- His record year was 1947 when he scored eighteen centuries in one season - something that has never again been achieved in first class English cricket.
- He retired in 1957 and went into journalism and broadcasting.
In 1947 the British economy was so poor that foreign holidays were banned, businessmen were allowed no more than 拢8 a day to spend on overseas trips, family motoring was all but stopped, guests had to use their ration books at hotels and domestic and industrial power supplies were to be turned off in some parts of the country one day every week.
