ListenÌýÌýListen (3'20) to a track by Len Liggins' band The Ukrainians called Zavtra taken from their album: Drink to my Horse! (Zirka Records - ZRKCD1).

A favourite song:

This is one of the first songs that I wrote with Peter. It has tempo changes very typical of traditional Ukrainian folk music - a lot of speeding up, then slowing down. The emotions range from the frantic to the tender - all within the space of one song! The subject matter is traditional, too, like all of the first songs we wrote. It is about a kozak (cossack) who has to ride off to war on his horse and leave his sweetheart behind. He promises to return and marry her, and as he departs he says, 'Oh my darling, pray for me, for tomorrow I will be under a foreign sky'.

On later songs we wrote about multinationals and politicians, working on collective farms but generally we cover the whole gamut of things: drinking, love, poverty, horses, dreams and sex!

On the new album we will cover a couple of punk songs and a lot of traditional Ukrainian tunes we've never done before.
