The German chancellor Angela Merkel has made it clear it's up to the British prime minister Boris Johnson to find a way of reaching a deal on leaving the European Union. At his first meeting with Mrs Merkel since taking office, Mr Johnson repeated his demand that the EU scrap the backstop.
