Emergency workers dedicate their entire lives to keeping the nation safe; sadly, for some firefighters, that has had long-term implications for their health. Instances of cancer among firefighters aged 35-39 are up to 323% higher than in the general population.

Presenter Gordon Smart meets the people fighting to get firefighters better protection and support.

In response to our film, the 91Èȱ¬ Office said that it is concerned by research indicating that firefighters may be exposed to contaminants, as their health and safety is paramount.

It said that it is working with the fire sector to understand whether action is needed, and that fire and rescue authorities must take firefighters’ health and wellbeing seriously.
