Gaza hospitals 'have not been protected'

A British doctor who visited Gaza details the harsh conditions of the hospitals there amid Israel's continuing war with Hamas.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says at least 27,000 Palestinians have now been killed since Israel began its military offensive. Coupled with the widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, the conditions for civilians are deteriorating day-by-day. Aid organisations say 2.2 million people are living in "inhumane conditions" and hospitals are barely functioning.

Health officials say the situation at two hospitals in the southern city of Khan Younis - where there has been intense fighting in recent days - is becoming desperate.

Dr Nick Maynard is a senior surgeon from Oxford University Hospital and also the clinical lead for Medical Aid for Palestinians. He told Newsday: 鈥淚t's extremely dangerous working in hospitals in Gaza at the moment. There are very few functioning hospitals now. Middle Gaza, where I was working at al-Aqsa Hospital, has become almost completely disabled."

"Effectively there's one remotely decent-sized hospital functioning for the whole of Gaza. They haven't been protected at all," said Dr Maynard. "There is no question that the hospitals are being targeted in Gaza and they have no protection at all."

Israel previously said it was "not aware of an airstrike" on the al-Aqsa hospital at the time Dr Maynard was working there. It also maintains that it does not target Palestinian civilians or hospitals.
