Czech Republic's worst mass shooting

Czech President Petr Pavel has declared a national day of mourning and appealed for unity after a man went on a shooting rampage at a university in the capital, Prague.

The 14 victims include the alleged gunman's father. Police in the Czech Republic are trying to determine the motive behind the country鈥檚 worst mass shooting.

Radek Simik, a linguistics professor at Charles University, said he doesn't know the names of those killed but doesn't really want to find out for fear that he might know some of the victims of the shooter. He was lucky that he and his students were on the first floor and the shooter was on the fourth floor.

Professor Simik told Newsday he'd seen some of the students who had escaped by jumping through a window walking with some difficulty.

"I heard the gunshots which went on for 15 minutes... the police operation was well-managed."
