Ziwe: 'I'm so intimidated by every guest and everyone's afraid of me'

Comedian Ziwe on how her satire is down to the awkwardness of interviews

American comedian Ziwe Fumodoh is known for her satirical commentary on politics and race. She rose to prominence during the Covid pandemic, when her gotcha-style interviews with celebrities on Instagram Live went viral.

Her comedy series Baited with Ziwe on YouTube, where she interviews her non-black friends and baits them into making racial faux-pas, gained even more views. She then went on to host the satirical late-night show Ziwe, which premiered on US network, Showtime, on 9 May 2021.

Ziwe recently spoke to superstar Dua Lipa who asked her how social media has influenced comedy.

"On the one hand it's offered people [the ability to] to skip the gatekeepers...online its so much easier to just put your work out there and have people respond to your work, and then boom, you're the next thing, " says Ziwe.

"Conversely the internet is so didactic...its so super left or super right that it really does foster antagonism. Is that good for comedy, is that bad for comedy? It depends on your point of view or how you're able to process how strongly polarised people are," she says.
