As one of Aamer鈥檚 good friends, Humza Yousaf, becomes Scotland鈥檚 first minister, Aamer himself takes on the prison service in two very different cases relating to death in custody.
The Firm searches for a route to justice for Katie Allen, a young woman who took her own life in Polmont Prison. In 2018, after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink-driving, Katie, who had no previous convictions and was a third-year student at the University of Glasgow, was sentenced to 16 months in prison. While serving her sentence, Katie鈥檚 family believe that she was bullied. At the age of 21, and due to be released on a tag in less than a month, Katie was found dead in her cell, having taken her own life. It is Katie鈥檚 family鈥檚 firm belief that the prison system in which she died needs urgent change. In the pursuit of reform on behalf of their clients, Aamer and the team must face the fact that the Scottish Prison Service is immune from prosecution.
In another prison-related case, Aamer represents the family of Calum Inglis, an inmate who died alone from Covid in his prison cell. His family allege that Callum begged prison officers for help for four days before he died.
