Estonian PM: “Ukraine is fighting our enemyâ€
The Prime Minister of Estonia says that her country’s history is being relived in Ukraine
The Prime Minister of Estonia has told HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur that her country’s support for Ukraine is “very black and white.â€
Estonia has spent over 1% of its GDP on support for Ukraine – the highest percentage of any country; and has accepted the most Ukrainian refugees as a percentage of its population.
Asked what she makes of the fact that other, larger countries, have not contributed as much, Ms Kallas said “We all come from our history and different countries in Europe have different histories.â€
“And therefore for us it is very black and white. It is our history, reliving this… it is our history in Ukraine right now.â€
“And that’s why we want to avoid what happened to us – 50 years of occupation all the atrocities, mass deportations, killings of people, pressing down our culture. We want to avoid that and therefore our defence right now starts from Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting our enemy.â€
Estonia became part of the Soviet Union in 1940, only regaining its independence in 1991.
