UN mobilises emergency teams for Libya
The UN鈥檚 Georgette Gagnon says convoys of essential life-saving supplies are 鈥渙n the road now and should arrive shortly鈥.
A United Nations official says its humanitarian affairs agency is rushing all the aid and staff it can into Libya, following devastating flooding.
Georgette Gagnon is the UN's Assistant Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya. She told Newsday: 鈥淭he damage is immense. The magnitude of the tragedy, the destruction, what we鈥檒l need to rebuild, the missing, the loss of life is really unprecedented in the country. Every system that they had in place has been seriously damaged. Electricity, infrastructure, communications, schools, hospitals, dams, bridges, roads, houses, livelihoods, some farmland was seriously flooded.鈥
She added: 鈥淭he most immediate priority is search and rescue equipment鈥rgent food, medical support, medical supplies, water of course and shelter鈥e have had a World Health Organization medical team in Derna and in the surrounding area since yesterday and we have some convoys of these essential life-saving supplies on the road now, which we understand should arrive shortly.鈥
