Morocco earthquake: Marrakesh survivor 'still in shock'

More than 2,100 people have died after Friday's earthquake in Morocco and the desperate hunt for survivors continues.

More than 2,100 people have died after Friday's earthquake in Morocco. The desperate hunt for survivors continues, but response teams are struggling to bring in machinery to remote areas. Villagers have been digging by hand and shovel to find survivors.

The 6.8-magnitude tremor left homes collapsed, roads blocked and entire villages destroyed in the Atlas Mountains. Emergency aid from the UK, Spain, Qatar and the UAE, and rescue teams from those countries are en route. A survivor, Meryam Hanifi, who was in a restaurant in Marrakesh when the quake struck told Newsday she ''was and still is in shock'' and thought it was a terror attack when the quake happened. She was visiting Marrakesh and could not go back to collect her belongings from the place she was staying in the Medina and stayed outside with blankets and other residents through the night. Now back at home in Casablanca she has been asked if she wants to go to the Atlas mountains to help people there but as she hasn't slept she will not go but ''a lot of people are going to help.''
