Indian government officials have said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold meetings with 15 world leaders over the course of this weekend's G20 summit in Delhi.

These will include talks with US President Biden and the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has Indian parents and an Indian wife. However, Russia鈥檚 President Vladimir Putin and China鈥檚 President Xi Jinping will not be attending.

Alok Sheel is a former member of the Indian prime minister鈥檚 economic advisory council and a veteran of five G20 summits. He told Newsday: 鈥淣obody expected President Putin to attend. The real surprise is the absence of China,鈥� adding that, 鈥淭here is a lot of expectation.鈥� Much will depend on whether India can get G20 members to agree a communiqu茅 on the war in Ukraine: 鈥淭here may not be an agreed communiqu茅. Were the communiqu茅 to happen, I think that would be seen as a major success.鈥�
