'You think you鈥檙e a failure? Join the club'
In the most intense encounter of the series so far, Stephen confronts a prisoner who murdered his girlfriend about the crime he now denies.
Inside Maghaberry, an emergency alarm sounds as Stephen is speaking to a prisoner. An inmate has turned violent and is wrecking his cell. It鈥檚 a sudden reminder of the dangers posed by inmates inside the jail every day. Some have a long history of criminality and violence, including one man who pleaded guilty to killing his partner. However, he now refuses to admit his guilt. Armed with the facts of the case, Stephen challenges him in a tense and uncomfortable interview in the prison chapel. This man claims to be religious, but does he have any remorse for what he has been convicted of? It鈥檚 a disturbing encounter that raises many questions.
Other inmates are finding it tough being separated from their families, and a tour of the visitation unit offers a heartbreaking insight into the impact of imprisonment on parents and their children. Inmates like Kel recognise their part in the pain caused to their own families, though he, like many others, are themselves the product of complicated upbringings. Like so many in the jail, drink, drugs and addiction have plagued his life. Can he get back on track to give his children the childhood he says he never had?
