Make A Difference Awards 2023: “Carer”

Meet the four finalists in our Carer category.

The four finalists in the 91ȱ Essex Make A Difference Awards 2023 “Carer” category are (in alphabetical order):

Karen Hardaker, who has been nominated for her work as a foster carer and social worker. Karen has helped to guide countless people on their fostering journey, and has brought up several foster children of her own over a period of nearly 20 years.

Tracy Holyland, who is a full-time carer for her son Harrison. He has Emmanuel syndrome which affects his physical and mental development. Harrison was given a life expectancy of just 10 years but is now 22 years old. Tracy is described as “an absolute saint” in her nomination, but she says she “just gets on with it”.

James Hunt, who is father and carer to two sons with profound autism. James also documents his family’s journey on social media, helping tens of thousands of people across the world through sharing stories. James is described in his nomination as “a lovely, gentle person who is an absolutely amazing carer”.

Ling Liu, who cares for his wife Kate and also his mother-in-law. Both Kate and her mum have fibromyalgia and other ailments, but Ling cares for both of them despite having autism himself. Kate says Ling is “the world’s best carer” and is “simply the best”.

The four finalists will find out if they have won at the 91ȱ Essex Make A Difference Awards ceremony on 21 September 2023. Good luck!
