The story of black nurses in the early days of the NHS is entwined in its history. Many of them - who came from the Caribbean - were not prepared for and were shocked by the hostility they faced. But they were here to do a job, they stuck at it and became vital to the success of the NHS. They paved the way for future black pioneers such as Martin Griffiths - an award winning Trauma surgeon - and Samantha Tross, the first black female Orthopaedic consultant. As the NHS reaches its 75th year, Martin and Samantha share their stories, experiences of medical school and what has driven them forward to become pioneers in their fields.
