Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after hundreds of buildings collapsed in both countries.

Almost 5,000 people are now known to have died in Turkey and Syria after a series of earthquakes struck while they slept and then again while they struggled to escape and find loved one. The first quake was a major one, registering 7.8. And then A separate 7.5-magnitude tremor hit at around 13:30 local time which officials said was "not an aftershock". At least 3,381 have died in Turkey, while Syria toll stands at 1,444; WHO says deaths could pass 20,000
