Nursery 'failed to make reasonable adjustments' for Downs Syndrome child

Michelle Cummins' daughter Amelie who has Downs Syndrome started Bangor's Trinity Nursery School in September 2020. Despite being assigned a dedicated classroom assistant, the school said Amelie would have to start 15 minutes later and finish 15 minutes earlier. With the support of the NI Equality Commission, Amelie's parents brought a case of discrimination against the nursery to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. The Tribunal found that Amelie had been discriminated against. Trinity Nursery said in a statement, subsequent to the ruling, that it was 'firmly committed to the principle of equality and opportunity for all disabled pupils.'
