Northern Ireland hospital closes Emergency Department

A Northern Irish hospital has closed its Emergency Department after ‘major incident’

Over the weekend, the Antrim Area hospital in Northern Ireland had to close its emergency department, after it had reached capacity.

A major incident was declared in the Northern Health Trust at the weekend because the situation was "unsafe," says Jennifer Welsh, the chief executive of the trust.

A major incident means there are too many patients for staff to deal with safely and ambulances were turned away.

Today’s Martha Kearney was granted exclusive access to the emergency department at the Antrim Area hospital.
