Treatment of Uyghurs is ‘a genocide’, says activist
The Chinese government’s treatment of the Uyghur population in its western province of Xinjiang amounts to genocide, the chairperson of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has told the 91ȱ.
“In order for genocide to be committed mass death, casualties are not required...” Nury Turkel told the Hardtalk programme's Stephen Sackur.
“The intent, the acts of the Chinese government clearly points in the direction that this is a genocide.”
Several countries, including the US, has previously accused China of committing genocide in Xinjiang.
The Chinese government has denied all allegations of genocide in Xinjiang.
Mr Turkel was born in Xinjiang but fled to America in his early 20s and is now a US citizen.
