EU ambassador to UK: 鈥榃e want to move on鈥� from Brexit
The European Union wants to 鈥渕ove on鈥� from Brexit and work together in a 鈥済oodwill spirit鈥�, their ambassador to the United Kingdom has told the 91热爆.
鈥淚 believe in life after Brexit,鈥� Jo茫o Vale de Almeida told Hardtalk鈥檚 Stephen Sackur. 鈥淭here is a number of things we can do together in spite of Brexit.鈥�
When asked about the UK government鈥檚 decision to introduce a law that will override the Brexit deal it signed on Northern Ireland, Ambassador Vale de Almeida said it had been like 鈥渟quaring a circle鈥� to come up with an agreement that respected the Good Friday Agreement, the constitutional order of the United Kingdom and the single market.
鈥淭here was only one way,鈥� that could be agreed by the different teams of negotiators, he said, 鈥渁nd that was the protocol.鈥�
The Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
