Professor tells of 85-year-old mother’s death in Mariupol
Andrei Kirilenko says his mother couldn’t be buried due to the danger from shelling.
A Ukrainian professor at the University of Cambridge has described how his mother Svetlana was found dead by a neighbour in the besieged city of Mariupol. Andrei Kirilenko told Today’s Justin Webb that because of the danger from Russian shelling, it was too dangerous for the neighbour to bury her. He had not been able to speak to his mother since early March – he believes she died on 11 March. The last time the two spoke, they had been ‘saying goodbye’.
