Covid: Ghana to fine airlines bringing in unvaccinated passengers

From today, the operator of Ghana's main international airport will fine airlines $3,500 for every passenger they fly into the country who has not been vaccinated against coronavirus or who tests positive on arrival. Ghanaians who are returning home will be vaccinated at the airport if they're not fully vaccinated.

The new directives are intended to stop the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 - and keep the country from being hit with any travel bans like those affecting other African countries like Nigeria and South Africa. But critics say it's all about image, not preventing the spread, and that it will just lead to a black market in fake documents.

Metro TV journalist Afua Adom is in Ghana.

"Vaccination rates in Ghana are quite low, they're about 10%, that's some of the lowest in the world... so I think it's also a move to get more people in the country vaccinated."
