Historian Tom Holland explains why King Athelstan has been voted the greatest monarch in English history.

Athelstan topped the poll on Tom's podcast 'The Rest is History', which he presents with fellow historian Dominic Sandbrook.

The Anglo-Saxon King is widely regarded as the first king of all England and beat Elizabeth I by just one percent in the online poll.
