Peng Shuai: WTA says Chinese tennis star's claims must be investigated

The Women's Tennis Association is threatening to pull out of China over the case of Peng Shuai - a Chinese player, who has won two grand slam titles, and who hasn't been seen in public since she accused former top Communist party official Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault. She made her allegation in a since-deleted post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, and Zhang, 75, has not responded to her claims. The head of the WTA, Steve Simon, has said the allegations must be investigated.

Glacier Kwong, a digital rights activist, thinks the threats are a "bold move" but that they won't have an immediate impact. She says that the results of an investigation in China are unlikely to be made public, and that Peng Shuai may be under state surveillance, and forbidden to made public contact with organisations outside China.
