Sudan: 'Huge' protests planned as coup General appointed leader
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has named a new ruling council with himself as the leader following last month's coup
Sudan's opposition says plans are underway to hold massive protests across the country on Saturday in reaction to the leader of last month's coup appointing himself as head of a new transitional ruling council.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan hasn't included any members of the civilian coalition which shared power with the military since the overthrow of president Omar al-Bashir in 2019 - and included members of the overthrown Islamist regime.
The move dashes any hope that the military leader could be persuaded to step down.
Sudanese film maker and opposition activist Hajooj Kuka says the shutdown of the internet has made organising difficult - but that people are determined to act against this.
"Right now people are out in the street, and all they're doing is trying to tell people 'come out on the 13th'. So what people are doing are small protests, word of mouth, using phones when they're on - because phones come on and off - so not having the internet has been a major setback... it's hard to organise and it's hard to tell the world what is happening."
