‘It’s what they do in Russia’: MPs block the suspension of a former Conservative minister
MPs block the suspension of a former minister found to have breached lobbying rules.
MPs voted in favour of reviewing the standards process after former Conservative minister Owen Paterson was found to have breached lobbying guidelines by the Commons’ standards committee. The vote means Paterson’s case will now be reviewed by a new committee chaired by fellow Conservative John Whittingdale. Labour said the move highlights the government’s “corruption” and that it wouldn’t take part in the new committee.
Chair of the current standards committee, Labour MP Chris Bryant, spoke to Nick Robinson this morning and condemned the vote as a “perversion of justice”. Also speaking to the Today programme was the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng who said the government was “trying to reform the system”.
