Swifts and the awakening city brings together poetry, film, music & contemporary dance, drawing inspiration from the city of Coventry.

How do distance, isolation and the body manifest in both words, sound and movement?

In times of enforced distance and strange, new isolation, how does the body react to itself, to others? How do we put a sense of dislocation, movement or belonging into words? How do enclosed indoor, or wide open outdoor, spaces make us feel? Watch as words transform and take flight – and take a swift’s eye view of Coventry, a city awakening from strange times.

This unique project, part of 91Èȱ¬ Contains Strong Language 2021 in Coventry, brings together a stirring and unforgettable combination of poetry, film, music and contemporary dance. It is an innovative visual and aural collaboration between Ascension Dance, led by choreographer and director Ashley Jordan, and poet Ian Humphreys, with filmmaker Anthony Shintai and musician Credo Kampeta, and draws inspiration from the city of Coventry, its history, people, spaces and places.

Filmed on location in and around Warwick Arts Centre. Thanks to Warwick Arts Centre, Ascension Dance, Ian Humphreys, Credo Kampeta and Anthony Shintai.
