How has the National Security Law affected life in Hong Kong?
China introduced the National Security Law (NSL) in Hong Kong in June 2020 in response to the pro-democracy protests that swept through the city the previous year.
Regina Ip, a member of Hong Kong's Executive Council and chairwoman of the pro-Beijing New People's Party, insists it was needed to restore law and order and that those detained were involved in "unlawful activity". On media freedom, she went on to say that outlets such as Hong Kong Free Press, a news website, remain "highly feisty and independent" and that "press freedom is alive and well".
