How widespread is the use of child labour in cocoa production?
Ivory Coast is the world's top cocoa producer but as many as 790,000 children are estimated to be working in the sector. This week, 22 people have been jailed in Ivory Coast for trafficking children to work in cocoa plantations.聽They were arrested following a swoop earlier this month in which nearly 70 children were rescued.聽
Charity Ryerson, the executive director of the Corporate Accountability Lab, an advocacy group based in Chicago, explains the extent of the use of child labour in Ivory Coast's cocoa sector and the problems involved in eradicating the practice.
