'No matter how much money you earn, you can鈥檛 buy a new brain'
Kay Stiles, wife of footballer Nobby Stiles, on her late husband's dementia
The World Cup-winning England midfielder Nobby Stiles died in October 2020 after a long illness. He had prostate cancer and advanced dementia. Six members of the 1966 England side have now died from dementia and Sir Bobby Charlton has been diagnosed with the condition. Garry Richardson spoke to Nobby's wife Kay and their son John. They told him they hope the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) will now offer more help to players who are diagnosed with dementia and that children shouldn't head the ball in training, risking head injuries. Kay Stiles added: "Nobody wants to end the last years of their lives in the state these lads have been. No matter how much money you earn, you can't buy a new brain."
