'Animation is changing'
Martha Kearney speaks to the director of Soul, the first Pixar film with a black lead
Pixar, the makers of Toy Story, have a new film out this Christmas - and it features their first black lead character. The film is called Soul and the protagonist is Joe, a jazz musician. Martha Kearney spoke to Pete Docter, chief creative officer at Pixar and co-director of the film. He told her that historically "animation is probably behind the curve in most industries in terms of it being very white" but that has been changing, especially in the last 5 years. He added: "I think as we look forward, you are going to see even more diversity and representation, from Pixar certainly, but I think even throughout the whole industry it's been a very big issue, especially this year."
