Tanzanian election: A critic's view
Police in Tanzania have arrested a number of opposition leaders, including the opposition presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu. They were taken into custody after calling for mass protests against the landslide victory of President John Magufuli in last week's election. The opposition has demanded a re-run of the poll, in which Britain and the United States said there had been systematic interference. Mr Lissu has since been released.
Ansbert Ngurumo is a Tanzanian journalist in exile who fled Tanzania to avoid arrest in 2017. He wants more African voices to be raised in concern.
"The African Union, even the East African Community, all these political bodies have become a club of these leaders trying to protect and shield each other... but I expect more voices from within and without the borders of Tanzania to say 'no, this is wrong'."
