'What we don鈥檛 want is for an outbreak of coronavirus in a university to result in students going home and spreading the virus'
Sir Mark Walport says students with Covid may have to stay at university for Christmas
Students in Scotland have been warned not to visit pubs or restaurants this weekend or go home after hundreds of students across Scotland tested positive for Covid. Sir Mark Walport, a member of the Government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, told Martha Kearney: "Universities are very large communities, they bring together people from across the country and they're far from monastic communities these days." He went on: "The one thing that we don't want is for an outbreak of coronavirus in a university to then result in students going home and spreading that infection to other parts of the country and other communities, to their parents, to their grandparents. If students are infected when it comes near to the end of term they may have to remain where they are." With Richard Lochhead MSP, Scotland's Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science.
