‘Cannot rule out students being asked not to return home at Christmas’

Matt Hancock says he can’t promise students can go home for Christmas

A major outbreak of Covid-19 at Glasgow University has led to 124 students testing positive. The university said the actual number of infected students was "likely to be higher", and added that 600 people were self-isolating. The Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Nick Robinson he would “not rule anything out” when asked whether students at universities suffering outbreaks would be told not to go home for Christmas. When asked if it was under consideration, he said: "I've learned not to rule things out. And one of the challenges we have is making sure that people are as safe as possible and that includes not spreading between the generations, but... this is not our goal." With analysis from the 91ȱ Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.
