In 1945, a corporal in the U.S. army (and oboist) visited Richard Strauss at his home and asked him if he had ever considered writing an oboe concerto. The old man declined. Six months later - aged 81 - Strauss gave the soldier this. A work that has come to be regarded as postmodern.
