'The best thing we can do is continue to open up the economy in a phased manner'

Alok Sharma on figures showing workers on payrolls fell by 649,000 during lockdown

Business Secretary Alok Sharma spoke to Mishal Husain following the publication of the latest unemployment figures, which revealed that the number of workers on payrolls has fallen by 649,000 between March and June. He said "I think the best thing we can do is continue to open up the economy in a phased manner, a cautious manner, and get businesses up and running again". He went on to say "As a Government, we have put in 拢160 billion of support through the furlough scheme, through loans, through grants to businesses. If we hadn't done that the economy would have been in a far worse position". Mishal also heard from a panel of workers who have recently been made redundant.
