Uighur 'forced labour', an Italian protest song and Chinese TikTok
A rare rendition of Bella Ciao, the Italian protest song, is the background music to videos that have been uploaded to 'D菕uy墨n' (the Chinese version of TikTok) that show Uighurs being transported to work in labour schemes from their homes in Xinjiang province.聽 The Chinese government says this is part of a 鈥減overty alleviation鈥 initiative that will help with employment in the community. How are these postings made in the usually highly-controlled Chinese social media platform? Isobel Cockerell, a journalist with the online reporting platform Codastory, explains how the song is used as a code.
