The Chancellor Rishi Sunak spoke to Martha Kearney the day after his summer statement and defended his decision to end the furlough scheme for all sectors by October. "Fundamentally we have to get our economy back to normal: we can't sustainably have a system where Government subsidise jobs and the only way that those jobs exist.鈥� He went on to say this would be "not fair either to the taxpayer but also to those people who are then trapped in a job which only exists because of that subsidy.鈥�
