Heinrich Heine - the 'go-to' poet for Schumann - wrote about love, the dream world and madness, and often at the same time. Written in 1840, it's a strange and surreal song. While his wagon rolls along slowly, the passenger - is jerked from contemplation by some sinister masked men. The song's rhythm makes us think of rutted lanes, potholes, and stumbling horses.
