Following the failed 1905 revolution in Tsarist Russia, Parisian society was gradually crammed with cultural refugees including Stravinsky and the ballet impressario Diaghilev. This scherzo - 'joke' in Italian - was written in 1945 by which time Stravinksy was living in the US. However, like his early Paris compositions for Diaghilev's 'Ballets Russes', the music is daring and provocative.
