While famous for his operas, Puccini composed non-vocal works too. This piece for string quartet - 'Crisantemi' (Chrysanthemums) - is a musical expression of grief following the death of his friend Alfonso, the King of Spain. Alfonso died - aged only 45 - in January, 1890. Puccini completed this heart-wrenching musical memorial over one night in the same month. In 1893, this music was adapted and used his tragic opera, 'Manon Lescaut'.
