'Cello Sonata in C' was written in 1949 after Prokofiev was inspired by a performance by renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Prokofiev had been effectively banned by the Soviet regime as a composer who didn't conform to their rules on artistic works but after private performances in front of official committees his Cello Sonata was allowed its public premiere in Moscow in 1950. Prokoviev proved he was able to write music that was both compliant with the cultural doctrine of the time and beautifully expressive.
