The theme chosen by Vaughan Williams for this 1910 work was composed by Thomas Tallis around 350 year earlier; the Elizabethan chant "Why Fum'th in Fight?". Vaughn Williams' Fantasia was composed for string orchestra. The musicians are split in to 3 sections of varying size - a very unusual format, allowing the melody to come at you from different directions, creating an enveloping soundscape.
