Shostakovich鈥檚 Symphony No. 5 premiered in Leningrad in 1937 鈥� a time when those in power thought art too potent simply to be left in the hands of artists, and with frightening results. The pressures under which it was composed may seem unimaginable now. It asks us to imagine nonetheless.
