Based on H.G. Wells’ 1933 novel 'The Shape of Things to Come', Alexander Korda’s 1936 film was dark, chilling and highly-stylised, with its visions of plague, rebellion and a new, class-based society. These themes and styles, along with cinematic set pieces including a rocket-ship’s flight to the moon, gave Bliss huge scope for a variety of orchestral textures, moods, rhythms and colour. He certainly didn’t disappoint, composing a score to match the seminal brilliance of both the novel and the production.
