'What we now need to do is.....restart the economy without restarting the virus'
Grant Shapps reacts to figures on the impact of the first full month of lockdown on jobs
The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Martha Kearney that 鈥渢here is a large degree of uncertainty in all of this鈥ut we are trying to bring this to as smooth a conclusion as possible, which is why we鈥檝e got the tapered nature of the furlough scheme.鈥 He was speaking after official figures revealed that the number of workers on UK payrolls fell by more than 600,000 between March and May. The Office for National Statistics said there had been a record fall in the number of job vacancies in the period. The early estimates reflect the impact of around six weeks of lockdown in the UK, in which almost nine million workers have been furloughed. But economists say the full impact on employment will not be felt until wage support schemes end in October. With analysis from the 91热爆 Economics Editor Faisal Islam.
