A former neo-Nazi has told 91热爆 Radio 5 Live about the process of deradicalisation and how he began to think differently about racism.

Tony McAleer said to Chris Warburton on 5 Live Drive: "Racism comes from a lack of compassion and understanding of others and the self".

The former skinhead said that it was the birth of his two children that gave him his first "real taste of compassion" and admitted this was when he "put someone else's interests before his own" for the first time in his life.

Mr McAleer, who was the leader of Canada's largest neo-Nazi group, has devoted his life to helping others leave extremist organisations.

He emphasised that having a full understanding of himself and his relationship with trauma was key.

"Until I could repair the relationship with myself, it wasn鈥檛 until then that I could begin to see the humanity in others" he added.
