Mahler's Symphony No. 5 is a huge work, lasting over an hour and travelling through a wide range of emotions. There is a peculiar genius about an artist who can make one enjoy a little sadness. Mahler’s gift for this is well demonstrated in the fourth movement – the Adagietto for strings with harp – of his Symphony No. 5, which has now entered the repertoire as a standalone piece. Approach it with caution.
