Lockdown on universal credit
There has been an increase in the number of universal credit applications, highlighting the amount of households in financial hardship during lockdown.
There were about 20,000 applications per month for the benefit in 2019. But, in the last four weeks, 130,000 claims for universal credit were made in Scotland.
The increasing number of Scots turning to state benefits matches trends seen across the UK.
